Attitude of A.P.Yatseniuk, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, to the Recognition of Independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation

Recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation violates numerous resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, including  № 1582 of 28 January 2005 and №1808 of 25 April 2008, which reaffirm the commitment of all Member States to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, and the necessity to define the status of Abkhazia and Ossetia within the State of Georgia in strict accordance with these principles.

The conflict in question has long ago exceeded the limits of "a frozen conflict" and become a challenge to the global security. Moreover, the conflict bore negative consequences both for the region, and for the whole world.

Settlement of the said "burning" conflict and recognition of the status of relevant territories should be secured solely under the procedure of international institutions, namely, by the resolution of the United Nations Security Council. Failure to comply with the said principle either at present, or in the past, as regards other "frozen" conflicts, can be regarded as an attempt to alter the world order.

At present, all international institutions, such as United Nations Organization, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, European Community, "Great Eight" and others should resume the dialogue between all the parties involved in the conflict, and take necessary measures to eliminate confrontation and secure territorial integrity of Georgia.

Ukrainian Parliament can not keep aside from the said processes. Therefore, responsible political forces should adopt a concerted resolution on the said issue.
